Captions and links
Use optional captions and image links without turning the Featured Image into a second content system.
The Featured Image widget can participate in normal content interactions such as captions and links while still sourcing the image dynamically.
Captions
Use a caption when it adds useful context. In reusable templates, keep the caption strategy consistent so pages without suitable attachment captions do not produce confusing empty or repetitive areas.
Links
Use linking only when clicking the image has a clear purpose. Typical choices include linking to the current content destination in a card-style design or to a deliberately configured URL.
Avoid redundant controls
If the surrounding card or heading is already the primary link, a second image link may be unnecessary. Prefer the simplest interaction that makes the layout understandable.
